Blood, sweat, tears, passion, family, faith, love- these words resonate with our family as we strive to work hard and design for our small business... but we recently were put in touch with a local farming family and they BLEED this. We are so honored and ecstatic to create a custom family wood sign for Rosie and Michael Silva from the Silva Ranch in Tracy, California.
Silva Ranch is a fairly new operation, but the passion and love for agriculture runs deep in this family. Their herd is raised simply with the intent that local families can buy the beef directly from the Rancher. Their grass-fed beef grazes on native grasses in Contra Costa and San Joaquin Counties, then a local butcher comes and slaughters the steers, the meat is then delivered to a local butcher shop, and families pick up their ranch fresh beef from the local butcher shop. You can purchase a whole, half, or a quarter steer and Rosie will help you decide which cuts you’d like to have the butcher cut and wrap up for you. Eating healthy and having her kids help in the kitchen is common for the Silva family, but Rosie says, “If it’s [beef] there, you’ll eat it.” No more needing to fix up a quick Mac and cheese for the kids when your freezer is full of beef! She believes that it’s a safe, reliable, and fresh source of food that all families can enjoy, not to mention the cost is significantly lower than if you purchased grass-fed beef from the local market.
Being raised in a ranching family, it’s no surprise that the farming way of life is what Rosie envisioned for her future family. As a young woman she knew her goals, so she attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and earned herself a graduate degree in Dairy Science and a minor in Water Science. After living the dream on the central coast, she moved back home to the Central Valley after college. Her parents had gifted her a Holstein heifer as a graduation present and Rosie dreamt of starting up her own dairy replacement facility so she raised the small heifer, sold her as a springer (pregnant heifer ready to calve), and bought three more heifers. It was about this time in her life, that she met another local farmer named Michael Silva. She sold him a Border Collie pup- and the next thing you knew, they were an item! Together they started a family and raise their three children with strong values and family traditions on the farm while also working to grow Rosie’s Dairy Replacement Operation.
As her husband farmed corn, wheat, oats, beans, alfalfa... Rosie was working with an investor and had her herd on rented irrigated pasture- and it was right next door to her home! She felt like she was finally seeing her dream come to life, but sadly in 2013 dairies began to shut down in the Central Valley because of high regulations. With the change in the economy, Rosie and her husband had to make the hard decision to sell the springers and buy a beef herd. Another blow came when they lost the lease on the pasture, but they were able to convince Rosie’s dad to let them graze with her parent’s cattle. It was a new direction, but passion and commitment led them to create Silva Ranch. The ‘bar over star’ brand is proudly marked on their beef- grass-fed beef raised here on local land, sold to local families like yourself!
Silva Ranch is a local ranching company that stands out above the rest. They pour love into all that they do and it inspires us. They uphold strong family traditions and raise their grass- fed beef on the same land Rosie’s Grandfather, Great Uncle, Uncle, and Father have grazed their herds over many years.
If you are interested you can purchase high quality beef from their website. You can also check out Silva Ranch on Instagram. They are currently taking preorders for the Spring 2019 and Fall 2019 harvests. It’s been such an eye opening experience for us to connect with this amazing family and we are so honored to create this piece for them. We can’t wait to see it hung at the ranch.
